>Does the tour requires to be sporty ?

No ! The power assistance makes the course accessible to all, including cyclists without training. The only requirement is to be able to pedale during 3 hours a day with limited efforts, and not to be in very bad condition!

Should we be familiar with the use of Electric Bicycle ?

No. Selected electric bicycles are very easy to use and you’ll have time to get familiar with them on the first day.

> Should we take a special bag for the trailer ?

No. Aventures Solaires provides each participant with a suitable waterproof bag in tow. This can contain 90L which is more than enough for one week.

> what kind of clothes shoud we take ?

Cycling shorts, sneakers, sunglasses, fleece jacket for the evening, a windbreaker for the descents and a rain jacket as a precaution. A swimsuit can be useful as well as hiking clothes. The helmet is provided. And do not forget the sunscreen!

> What are the housing conditions ?

Throughout the course, Aventures Solaires has selected  hotels, gites and cottages offering all quality accommodation (usually double) and tasty food made from local products.

> What happens in case of technical failure ?

Bicycles and solar equipment are selected for their reliability. In the unlikely event of a breakdown, assistance is provided.

> What happens if the sun does not shine ?

No problem. Our bikes are equipped with two batteries that provide sufficient autonomy to move through each step. If unfortunately there’s not enough solar energy during a day to fill your batteries, there are two alternatives. You can either save the batteries for the next day by selecting a power assist mode less “greedy” (and therefore a little more pedaling) or continue with the maximum assistance and use in the evening an emergency charger which allows recharge batteries in house, and so benefit from two full batteries the next morning. In summer, around the Tour des Ecrins, days without sun are very rare.

> Should we fear extreme weather conditions ?

No. Even though weather can be surprising in mountains, program can be adapted to benefit from the most favorable periods and can be adjusted to avoid the most demanding parts.

> Should we care about traffic ?

The course focuses on small and peaceful roads so that you can cycle calmly. There are still some portions of national roads that we can’t avoid but their length is very reasonable.

> How fast do we cycle ?

Around 20 km per hour on average, without forcing. The electric assistance gradually cut beyond 25km/h, in accordance with French law. It is rare to exceed this speed. Except in downhill course of course

> What does a typical day looks like ?

Each group has the opportunity to collectively set the time schedule he wants, and there is no obligation to follow the same schedule every day. However, the days traditionally consist of two periods of 1 to 2 hours of cycling. One in the morning and one after lunch , punctuated with breaks to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Let’s have a look at Aventures Solaires concept from a technological point of view, and discover the main elements that make up our Solar Bike.

> The bike and its electric motor

Everything starts with a powerful electrically assisted bike, which has a 36V brushless motor with an output of 250W. This motor is located in the bottom bracket so that its efficiency is based on the pedaling frequency and not on the speed of the bike. Thus the motor is effective even at low and moderate speeds, which is ideal to cycle in mountains. The motor provides proportional assistance through a torque sensor also located in the bottom bracket. It multiplies the power of pedaling by a factor dependent on the assistance mode selected : ECO mode, TOUR, SPORT, or TURBO as shown on the figure below :

ModeAssistance_EN

The assistance is effective up to 25 km per hour, according with European legislation. Beyond this speed, it cuts very gradually. But it doesn’t prevent you going faster downhill for example, or pedaling harder in !

> The trailer

This is the part which embeds the solar charger. It is a single-wheel trailer, suspended for both rider and photovoltaic modules comfort. It also hosts a 90L waterproof bag to take all the stuff you need during the tour and provide logistical autonomy.

> The photovoltaic modules

This is the core of our solar bike, since they ensure conversion of solar energy into electrical energy. The selected modules are monocrystalline technology modules, called “back contact”: the electrical contacts are on the back of the solar panel and so do not ombrent the cells, resulting in the best area efficiency on the market  (> 20% ) and also minimizes the clutter.

These modules operate with a voltage between 17 and 19V, therefore we’ll have to raise their tension, as discussed below.

The installed output of the Solar Bike is 200Wc *, split into two panels of 100Wc each. 100Wc are always available (even during cycling) and additional 100Wc is deployed off during pauses. If properly exposed, the modules can produce more than 1000Wh every day during the “Tour des Ecrins”. This excellent performance can be reach because of the exceptional amount of sunshine in this area.

*Wc measures the power of a single module at 25 ° C and irradiation of 1000W/m²

> Solar Controller

This is the brain of the system that performs two different functions : optimize the amount of energy produced by the photovoltaic modules in adapting their electrical voltage to the light conditions via a control MPPT ( Maximum Power Point Tracking) and convert module voltage ( 17-19V ) to the battery charging voltage ( 36-42V )

> Batteries

Lithium -ion batteries have, as the engine, a rated voltage of 36V and a capacity of 800Wh. They act as buffer between modules and the engine. Batteries deliver the exact power requested by the cyclist while storing solar energy to return it at the appropriate time. Incidentally they can be charged into the mains in case of very clowdy day, so that you start the day after with two fully charged batteries.

You are now ready to hit the road on your Solar bike, in a total autonomy as regards logistical or energetic issues.

Let the sun gives you a ride !

Who wants to win the king of the mountains Polkadot jersey ?

Of course, being king of the mountains during the “Tour de France” is a three week challenge. But, thanks to Aventures Solaires high level program, one week is enough to take the third step of the podium if you’re the first at the top every day.

Indeed, with 3  legendary  cols (Izoard, Galibier and Alpe d’huez, all of them being ranked at the highest level), 2 first category passes (Moissière and Lautaret) and some easier passes, you could earn more than 100 points in one week.

This would have been enough to take the third step in 2015 behind the unbeatable Christopher Froome or the Colombian specialist Nairo Quintana. Other times, other customs (and other scale),it would leave you far behind Richard Virenque (record holder of the mountain contest with 7 polkadot jerseys) and his 579 points !

So come and challenge the best cycling champions on the legendary roads (Galibier has been climbed 32 times on 102, Alpez d’Huez 30 times) and may the best (wo)man win !
